I want to thank everyone for their responses. I really want to thank André for confirming what I thought. I read the articles mentioned and found they weren't able to fix the problem. They just verified what I suspected.
I have come up with another solution. I added 2,000GB virtual drives, ~1.95TB, to the virtual machine. I know I can snapshot these. I am now migrating the files to the new virtual drives. It appears to be working. The machine is running Red Hat linux and the migration is happening while it is running. I backed up the server before adding the 2TB virtual drives that caused the problem. If things do go wrong, I shouldn't lose much data.
